Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo: Anata to Koibito Tsunagi

Like its predecessors, Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo: Anata to Koibito Tsunagi (A Kiss for the Petals: Joined in Love With You) is another yuri visual novel by Fuguriya. The series touches upon the different kinds of yuri relationships, with some even attracting controversy. Anata to Koibito Tsunagi is the third game in the series, and focuses on the relationship between an honor student, Mai Sawaguchi and the tsundere transfer student, Reo Kawamura. (English patch now available)

Summary:

My name is Sawaguchi Mai. I always get myself involved with my classmate, Kawamura Reo. Reo is pretty, short, and has silky hair… In short, she’s cute. But sometimes, she can be really obstinate. I’m trying to do my best to get her to get along with the rest of the class, but since we’re both headstrong we always end up fighting. It’s so frustrating, especially since she can’t do anything without me around!

But whenever I talk to her, Reo always acts like I’m bothering her. I wonder if she hates me…
But then, just when I got all depressed Reo came up to me and told me,
“You’ve got it all wrong! I love you, Mai! I love you so much!” Her confession completely took me by surprise. Could it be that I’m in love with Reo too!?

The third game is one of the most famous, mainly because of the very likable characters (it even has an anime adaptation [NSFW]). Much like the others, Anata to Koibito Tsunagi is a love comedy, with those antics that never get old. With the loli tsundere Reo and the responsible honor student Mai, there are a lot of sweet and funny situations to be seen.

For this review, I won’t be using my old system, since I just realized that the beauty of the game isn’t solely dependent on the its different elements as separate entities, but it’s more on the combination of these said elements.

Now let’s go over the content. As this is a yuri eroge, you can guess that this game isn’t for everyone. If you’re not yet of age, then you may want to stay away from this game; I won’t mind if you still buy the game, though. If you don’t like yuri, then I think that you wouldn’t even read this far. ^_^

The characters are of the typical archetypes of anime girls: the loli tsundere and the responsible class rep character with a playful attitude. Not that this makes the game any less worthwhile to anyone who likes yuri. The Mai and Reo pair is very fun to see. There is never a single boring moment with these two. The love comedy scenes are very cute and can be quite endearing at times, and I think the game will be successful even if they remove all of the ecchi scenes.

The art, as usual, is absolutely beautiful. As far as visual novels go, I think Sono Hanabira has some of the most well-made CGs during its time, and even today. The character designs are from Peko, who is responsible for the character designs for Mayoi Neko Overrun! as well as other visual novels. the backgrounds for the game are well-made as well, and it gets even better with the succeeding games and the remake of this particular installment. I also praise the use of chibi art for this series, they’re well-placed within the story and adds to the overall cuteness and fluffiness of the game. It also adds a moe factor, which is really good when used in this series.

Another good thing about the Sono Hanabira series, is how well they handle the generous helping of H-scenes in the game. They give a more emotional and romantic feel, rather than a purely erotic tone, which is one of the reasons that Hanabira stands out from the rest.

The music is of the classic Sono Hanabira fare. Listening to the music is easy on the ears and adds to the fluffy atmosphere of the game.

Overall, Anata to Koibito Tsunagi is a fun ride for anyone who is into shoujo-ai and yuri in general. The characters are very entertaining, the art is wonderful, and the yuri goodness can only be described as “a gift from the yuri goddess (quoted from several people)”. If you’re looking for a good shoujo-ai story and don’t mind a bit of ero, then this game is for you.

Recommendation Level: Medium-High (pretty good)

For those of you who are interested, I’ve also written about other Sono Hanabira merchandise.

  1. Well written and detailed review once again dood. I am also honored that you mentioned me as one of your friendly neighborhood allies of yuri justice. Mai and Reo do rock the house down after playing their debut game. Now we must wait for the translation of their glorious sequel, along with the other 4. however, the one that takes top priority is episode 8, though I suspect 7 is next.

    • I can only help in spreading the knowledge of these games and gather those who support yuri for possible future official localizations.

Mai and Reo are absolutely adorable.^^ though I find the story of Watashi no Ouji-sama deeper, Anata to Koibito Tsunagi is also a great piece of yuri literature.

I do hope that they can finish episode 7 soon. and about episode 8, how I wish that I could help with that one…

      • Who knows? summer vacation isn’t that far away. Perhaps there’s a chance you’ll get a call from team alphabet.

We must all do what we can in order to share the beauty of animated girl love with those who accept it.

Although Mai is well endowed, she’s missing something…the derriere. I guess Sara’s is the most noticeable one in my eyes. Even the beautiful vampire’s behind isn’t as slender as Sara’s.

      • My summer vacation actually starts next week, so I’ll probabaly become more active by then.

        Oh, you. ^^

Oh, and I think I’ll be going to a convention in April. I’ll be sure to write something about that, so look forward to it. ^^

And a question… Is Kannazuki no Miko good? I heard it’s mecha with yuri, but I’m not too fond of mecha.

The mecha is the least important part of the show. It’s ChiMeko that’s the show’s primary attraction. Check out my Kannazuki no Miko G-View for more details.

    • I see. I’ll take your word for it and brace myself for an awesome ending.

      • Don’t miss a single detail of their relationship. I don’t know how you’ll react based on their decisions but believe me when I say that you’ll never forget this legendary couple for as long as you live.

      • I’m still watching the first episode and I found the arrival of the Orochi to be very funny, especially when Souma was possesed(?) by something. I don’t know… it was just so funny for me.

Like I said, as an action-mech anime, don’t expect much. Also as the review mentioned, the whole Orochi plot line is an excuse to delve the girls into a crisis.

    • Yeah, I figured. Still, it WAS quite funny…

And by the way, we’re going WAY off topic here. Haha!

      • I know. It’s better to wait until after you’ve finished watching the show. Make sure to enjoy Souma’s trademark manly HIMEKO screams.

Back to Mai X Reo, the bully/tsundere pairing is what really gets me about this couple. Reo’s a hopeless ojou-sama and Mai’s the only one who can save her and in excahnge, Reo has to patiently wait 2/4’s of the story before she can FINALLY have some sweet Mai Pie.

      • “Make sure to enjoy Souma’s trademark manly HIMEKO screams.”

That scream almost sent me to heaven for its comedic value! Gold, I say, gold!
And about that last scene, it was sort of wrecked by Souma’s scream. I want my yuri kisses to be free of manly screams, haha!

And back on topic, I really liked the seme/uke relationship of Mai and Reo. Reo being dominant is also a nice treat.

and for the record, yuri H is the only kind of H that I can tolerate. I don’t know why, myself.

Here you go. My guide to all the good quality Yuri H you can handle.

Don’t worry, the next time Chikane and Himeko get closer together, Souma will not be there to ruin their moment.

Hmm, I think Reo’s catchprahse are her reactions, mostly shocked ones.
Mai’s catchphrase is “Hai, hai”. Also, as I had predicted time and time again, Yuuna’s power is in a league of its own. She cannot be matched in terms of her influence over other women who think the same way she does. Yuuna is truly a powerful and influential beauty…who likes “liquid gold”.

    • I think I’ll pass. I don’t want too much H in my life. Thanks for the link, though. I’m sure people would appreciate it.

      Yuuna is indeed powerful.

      • No problem dood. The H are there should your curiosity get the best of you.

Agreed with the review. Wonderfully paced, beautifully drawn, this visual novel is quite an enjoyable read. Even if the characters are common archetypes, they’re super fun to watch.
    Loved it!

    • Another thing I love about Hanabira is that they handle love comedies very well. Even if they seem like running gags sometimes, their antics never grow old!

I’ve also started to read Hanabira 7 and 8. Though I can only understand the spoken dialouge and about 80% of the non-voiced text, I don’t think I can provide a good enough insight. Maybe I’ll wait for more translations or just study kanji.

  5. An all round great article!
